For a significant part of my life, I wasn’t always sure what I wanted to be when I grew up. As time went on and as one day taught me more than the last, I went from being a wide-eyed student in high-school, studying tirelessly for my tests to graduating college and finally joining the tech world I’d been introduced to from such a young age. I started off as an Electrical Engineer, and it wasn’t until my second year in college that I was exposed to some coding courses. It was then that I decided to jump ship and build my career towards information technology. Before I knew it, time and effort quickly turned me into who I am today, placing my feet directly into the professional world for the first time.
Taking a position with a start-up is probably one of the boldest decisions I have made for myself to date. Having worked for one of the biggest companies in the tech world, I was a bit apprehensive about it all at first. Stepping out of one’s comfort zone and the familiar is never an easy task, especially when you’ve worked so hard to get where you are and a bad decision could potentially affect your future. That’s the thing with risks I guess – they’re never supposed to be the easy or guaranteed option. For me, it came down telling myself that to learn more and make further advances in my career, I had to move forward in ways that were a bit scary, which meant stepping out of my comfort zone.
Entering the Igloo
From the first meeting with the Arctiq Team, through my mission, to my first “Expedition”, it all just felt right. Learning more about the projects we are working on, the technologies we use and our future plans, gets me excited to explore all the new avenues I will be able to take with this company. I can easily see myself growing with Arctiq and that in itself eliminates any doubts that I might have had before.
In the time I’ve been with Arctiq, I can already see that it will be a decision I won’t regret. Meeting the team and being a part of Arctiq is a very wholesome experience. You learn that hottest IT buzzwords such as “DevOps” , “Automation” , “open source” form the basis of the work being done here which certainly adds a “cool” factor to the job. It’s a totally different culture compared to a typical 9 to 5 job and everyone here at Arctiq embraces this culture entirely. There is a great deal of flexibility on how things work here but the end goal is the same: producing quality work and improving everyday to the high standards we have set for ourselves.
As for the work itself, I’m already diving into a diverse set of technologies and tools from open source ones such as Kubernetes and Ansible to “Enterprise-Grade” ones such as OpenShift Container Platform. Prior to joining Arctiq, I experimented with these tools but only in my limited free time. Now, my day to day is about mastering these tools and actually delivering them to our customers - with the help of the numerous resources available to us and the collaborative effort of the team!
This is just the beginning. Taking the position with Arctiq was step one, and writing this blog today, cementing that position as part of the team, is step two. Here’s to many more steps ahead.
